![]() ![]() While the first game had you pass laws in the name of survival, Frostpunk 2 sees the people of the city have more involvement and say in the laws you pass. The factions also play into one of the most exciting new features I got to see, which was the Council hall. How you choose to resolve it will depend on who you ask in the city – which is home to different community factions that will weigh in with their ideas and approaches. This allows you to explore different ideas that are presented as a challenge or a problem to address in order to further develop the city. The buildings themselves still have specific functions in the districts, with Stokalskia and Juszczyk showing me the Research Institute, a special building that gives you access to a system known as the "idea tree". Where Frostpunk had us trying to survive the end of the world, Frostpunk 2 instead poses the question: how do you create a brighter future for the people after the apocalypse?īut the scope isn't just felt in terms of the scale of the city you can create and shape in Frostpunk 2. These factions each have their own set of values and beliefs that factor into the laws you try to pass and what decisions you make as you try to shape your own utopia. Set 30 years after the blizzard storm that led to catastrophe, times have changed, and your city is home to a growing community that sees the rise of different factions. What's most exciting, though, is what the team at 11 Bit Studios has done when it comes to the evolution of the social system. In fact, as Stokalskia points out, what I see Juszczyk start to build up is a central district that's already roughly the size of a whole city you'd have at the end of a full playthrough of Frostpunk 1. It's immediately apparent that much has been expanded upon, from the threats you can face to the mechanics and features you can use. With co-director and design director Lukasz Juszczyk and game and art director Jakub Stokalskia as my guides, I took a look at Frostpunk 2's Utopia builder, which is the game's take on a sandbox mode that shares some similarities with the endless mode in the first game. “Frostpunk 2 not only has the intriguing magic of the predecessor and the meaningful entertainment vibe we are so attached to, but it also grows in scale, it has its own messaging and it’s not the only thing we’re working on with the IP.”Īnd if 11 bit builds on what makes the first Frostpunk special, there’s a good chance it’ll be drilling for gold, not just oil.When I sat down to check out a hands-off demo of Frostpunk 2, I was immediately curious to see how the follow-up has built on what came before, and what it's doing differently. “And I expect the universe of Frostpunk to grow largely beyond the original game. It overtook This War of Mine this year, although being four years younger than the latter,” Miechowski said. “Both when it comes to units and revenue, Frostpunk is our top bestseller so far. The console edition was worth the effort, and we’ve got great feedback from console players, proving they liked the game.”ġ1 bit also said Frostpunk is its top games, saleswise. As a strategy game, it also seems more appealing to PC gamers, however, I can call the game a hit, and it sold super-good on PC and consoles. “However, we’ve redesigned the UX from scratch to be native for the Xbox and PS4. ![]() Console release took us some time to deliver, as it was a year-and-a-half later after the PC version,” 11 bit’s Pawel Miechowski said over email. ![]() “That was the initial platform for the game. It’s been 30 years since the last game, and now, you’re leading your city and looking for oil, not coal, to power this frozen world.įrostpunk 2 is available on multiple platforms, but PC is where it’s done best. In the sequel, you’re again building another city looking for resources in this frozen post-apocalyptic world. A team of almost 70 folks are working on the sequel. So doing a sequel makes sense, as does turning Frostpunk from a one-off hit and into a franchise.įrostpunk 2 is also one of three games in development at the Warsaw-based studio. It would also land console ports in 2019, three expansions, and a board game. The original Frostpunk throws in survival mechanics to city-builders, and 11 bit went on to sell over 3 million copies ( including 250,000 within three days of its release and 1.4 million in its first year). Today, 11 bit studios announced the sequel to the 2018 game. The frozen future of Frostland is getting a little oilier in Frostpunk 2.
